November Rain set

"With our video for ‘Don’t Cry’, and the fight that Stephanie and I had over the gun, you don’t necessarily know what’s going on. But in real life that happened with Erin and myself. I was going to shoot myself. We fought over the gun and I finally let her win. I was kind of mentally crippled after that.
Before shooting our documentary, I said, 'This seems really hard, 'cause it really happened'. And the night we wrote the scene, my friend Josh said, 'Okay, how are you going to play that?' He wanted to rehearse and I was like, 'Look, leave me alone.' But he kept pushing until, finally, I stood up. I had this cigarette lighter that looked like a real gun and I said, 'Look, I'm gonna do it like this.' And I just went over and slammed around in the hallway a bit and threw the gun and said, 'Is that good enough for you?' And he said, 'Yes!'
[…] But it was a very painful process doing that and it’s even weird now to be involved in a relationship where the person I’m involved with is actually playing parts that are written about the two of us, about fictional characters, about things in my past relationships. It’s a very touchy thing to do.”

The lyrics to “November Rain” do not discuss the suicide issue, only the tempestuous relationship. The video, on the other hand, follows the short story (‘Without you’ by Del James) more closely, from love and life, through death and the funeral of the bride. Although the video doesn’t explain how the girlfriend died, it can be seen, by looking at the girlfriend in the casket, that there is a line down her face. That is, in fact, a mirror. Families of head-trauma victims, who want to have an open-casket funeral, can use a mirror reflecting the intact side of the face to make the deceased appear whole. It can therefore be inferred that, as in the short story, the girlfriend was shot in the head. This scene implies that Seymour shot herself.

November Rain is one of the biggest, most expensive music videos ever made. An estimated 1.5 million dollars was poured into its production. The events of this video follow the ending to Don’t Cry. Axl has overcome the issues plaguing him, and realized his love for Stephanie was more important than anything in the world…❞

"When we were doing that EP for L.A. Guns, like ‘83? He was playing "November Rain" - and it was called "November Rain"- you know, on piano. The guitar solo is amazing. Way back then. It was the only thing he knew how to play, but it was his. He’d go, 'Someday this song is gonna be really cool.' And I'd go, 'It's cool now.' 'But it's not done', you know, he used to say. And, like, anytime we’d be at a hotel or anywhere, there’d be a piano; he’d just kinda play that music. And I’d go, 'When are you gonna finish that already', you know? And he’d go, 'I don't know what to do with it.'

❝Axl wanted to make the story Without You into a full-length feature film, but his budget would not allow it so he filmed a trilogy of videos instead. “Don’t Cry,” “November Rain,” the short story Without You by Del James, and “Estranged” are a four part series in this order.❞
